WEST SPRINGFIELD – A fire on Wednesday afternoon appeared to cause significant damage outside the Courtyard by Marriott hotel on Riverdale Street.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control, reported at around 1:45 p.m., and the extent of the interior damage was unclear. Firefighters ripped off much of the exterior on the south side of the building along the second and third floors. The rooms on the second floor appeared to have suffered interior damage, although its extent is unclear.
Heavy smoke and flames billowed from the second floor when firefighters first arrived.
The hotel, located at 855 Riverdale St, directly across from Showcase Cinemas, is a new facility. It has been open for less than a year.
Several employees huddled in the parking lot as firefighters worked on the building. The employees said they were not authorized by their employer to speak to the press.
It is not known how many guests were staying at the hotel, nor if they will be allowed to go inside.
West Springfield Police closed Riverdale Street, or Route 5, to Elm Street for northbound traffic to allow fire vehicles access to the scene of the fire.
