UIPE Protective Gear Completes Ground Compatibility Testing> US Air Force> Post Display

KIRTLAND AIR BASE, NM (AFNS) –

A joint military test team recently conducted ongoing development and operational testing of the Air 2 Piece Under Garment Integrated Uniform Protector Set at Dyess Air Force Base, TX.

UIPE Air 2PUG is a two-piece carbon-based protective undergarment designed to be worn under the CWU-27 / P flight suit and is intended to provide chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protection to aircrews in environments toxic.

The test team consisted of members of the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center’s Detachment 2 and the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron from Eglin AFB, Fla., Task Force Test and assessment of the Navy, and the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Agile Combat Direction Support Division Human Systems.

The new system is intended to provide better mobility, better breathability and lower thermal load for crews. UIPE Air 2PUG allows aircrews to stay in the suit longer and do their jobs with less heat load or risk of heat injury.

During this test phase, the UIPE Air 2PUG was tested on C-130J Super Hercules crews from the 39th and 40th Airlift Squadrons that are part of the 317th Airlift Wing at Dyess AFB. The crew simulated checks before the aircraft and performed a ground excursion in order to field test the new UIPE Air 2PUG garment. The test event also focused on the interoperability and compatibility of the garment with current equipment.

“The joint ground test provided critical user feedback to the engineering and test team,” said Lt. Col. Brent Gaylord, commanding officer of 317 Operational Support Squadron. “The 317 Airlift Wing used a full crew to include female crew members representative of our diverse crew force and to ensure that all ergonomic factors are taken into account. Updating ten year old equipment is an exciting process to participate in and is essential to maintain our quality advantage over our global competitors as we continually seek full spectrum preparation.

“This was the last ground compatibility test event,” Tech said. Sgt. Bryce Gardner, AFOTEC Det. 2 Responsible for the flight crew equipment program. “Previous test events were conducted with the KC-135 (Stratotanker) at McConnell AFB, Kansas; the HH-60 (Pave Hawk) at Nellis AFB, Nevada; and the F-15 (Eagle) at Eglin AFB. The multiservice operational test and evaluation will take place in the first quarter of fiscal 2022.

“This test event went very well and the test team gathered all the data required due to the exceptional support received from the Dyess Aircrew Flight Equipment team and the participating C-130 crew,” Gardner said. .

Once testing is complete and UIPE Air 2PUG approved, it will be sent to all Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Army crews on fixed-wing, rotary-wing, ejection-seat, and full-frame aircraft.
