DERBY – The Twins played a home derby to defeat Great Bend 5-1 on Saturday in the most unique game in Bat Cats history. The Bat Cats (15-11) and Derby (10-11) meet again Sunday at 3 p.m. at Al Burns Memorial Field.
It’s just half the story.
The Great Bend Bat Cats couldn’t buy a home plate umpire break.
Great Bend coach Roger Ward has been sent off.
The plate umpire finally left the field in the middle of the Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game with Derby.
Derby’s Josh Bostick made a home run but was left out of the game while leading the bases.
Bostick started the madness in the third inning when he faced Bat Cats first baseman Andrew Enwiya after a homerun.
Several appeals tilted Derby’s path, starting with a Brett Freiberg pop fly in the fourth inning which was ruled as a foul that would have loaded the goals with one out.
Ward finally had enough when several ball hitting calls went against the Bat Cats.
Nicholas Thibodeau of Derby hit Nick Lopez at home in the first inning. Bat Cat JD Ortiz scored in the second inning for a 1-1 draw.
Bostick started the derby with a home run in the third round. Thibodeau passed Kirk Woolf at home for a 3-1 lead. Derby’s Cade Baker and Steve Saunders drilled back-to-back homers in the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead.
The Bat Cats scored five hits against Derby pitchers Riley Taylor (2-0), Murphy Bostick and Brody Lodgson.
