Opener performs four flight demonstrations of human-controlled eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft – sUAS News

Opener, a pioneer in electric air vehicles for consumer travel, today announced the historic completion of four man-operated flights from BlackFly, the world’s first eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft. Two BlackFly production vehicles took to the skies in front of hundreds of thousands of participants in the 2021 Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

BlackFly eVTOL aircraft were flown by members of the Opener team, Eleanor Li, Plant Manager, and Marcus Leng, Founder and CEO, on July 27, 2021, and Kristina Menton, Director of Operations, on July 31, 2021. Operators showcased the powerful capabilities of BlackFly. vertical take-off and landing, cruise flight, hover, spin, sideways and forward flight, and return home.

“It was a momentous day for air vehicles and the future of transportation,” said Marcus Leng, Founder and CEO of Opener. “With over 35,500 miles driven and vehicles in production, we have shown that BlackFly is a first in this space.”

No pilot‘s license is required to drive BlackFly ultralight vehicles.

On October 5, 2011, history was quietly written near the small town of Warkworth, Ontario, Canada. That day saw the first manned flight of an all-electric fixed-wing VTOL aircraft. This event prompted the formation of a stealth society with the sole purpose of continuing the development of this unique new technology. In September 2014, the company reorganized into an Opener and relocated the majority of its operations to Silicon Valley in California in order to pursue an accelerated and free development schedule. Unveiled in 2018, BlackFly is the world’s first all-electric Ultralight Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft to perform human-operated flights in public.
