Navigating the Navy: Norfolk Naval Station

Anthony Everett explores Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world, and takes us through the life of a sailor

PREPARATION AND AS IT DOES FOR ALL SAILORS, START WITH THE BASICS. >> YOU WILL FLY AND THIS KIND OF PLANE LATER TODAY. >> GETTING TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER AT SEA IS NOT EASY AND REQUIRES TRANSPORT BY C2A GREYHOUND CARGO PLANE. BEFORE HEADING TO THE TRUMAN, WE SPEND A DAY AT THE NAVAL STATION, THE LARGEST NAVAL BASE IN THE WORLD AND GET INTRODUCED TO THE LIFE OF A SAILOR. >> LET’S GO ON THE BACK AND GET THE COMBINATIONS FOR YOU. >> IS ANYTHING NEEDED? I NEED SOMETHING CUSTOMIZED AND SHAPED. >> CLOTHES THEY WEAR – >> THIS IS A WORK UNIFORM. >> THE RIGHT WAY TO PACK THE AC BAG. >> JUST ONE. >> I FEEL LOST MISSIONARY DISCIPLINE. IT’S NOT LIGHTWEIGHT. >> KNOW IT IS NOT. >> TO THE VESSELS ON WHICH THEY SERVE AND WHY THEY SERVE. >> I DID SOMETHING – SOMETHING I COULDN’T HAVE DONE BACK HOME, TRAVELING ALL OVER THE WORLD. >> SHE IS FROM WEBSTER, MASSACHUSETTS, IN TRUE MILITARY FASHION, WE DID A LITTLE RECONNAISSANCE. >> TO PROVE YOU’RE FROM WEBSTER, WE NEED TO HEAR THE NAME OF THE LAKE. >> SO – I THINK THAT’S RIGHT. >> SHE ALSO PASSED THE NAVY TEST, RECENTLY ASSIGNED TO THE USS GERALD FORD, THE MOST TECHNICAL AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN THE FLEET. OUR NAVAL STATION TOUR CONTINUES AS WE VISIT NAVY SUBMARINES AND OTHER SERVICE SHIPS, INCLUDING THE DESTROYER USS COLE, BACK IN COMBAT EQUIPMENT AFTER THE SUICIDE BOMB ATTACK IN 2000 WHICH CLAIMED THE LIVES OF 17 SAILORS AND INJURED DOZENS MORE IN YEMEN. A SENSITIVE REMINDER AND THE — OF THE RISKS OF THE SERVICE. WE ALSO MEET OTHERS. >> WE ARE LIKE A BIG TAXI FOR THE MARINES. WE GO WHEREVER THEY NEED US TO TAKE THEM. >> HE HAS A VERY SIMPLE REASON FOR CHOOSING TO JOIN THE NAVY. >> SAILORS DON’T DIG HOLES. >> HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HELPING TO MONITOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE CREW, AND THE NATURAL EVOLUTION OF THIS FORMER BOY SCOUT. >> THE LIFESTYLE YOU HAVE RAISED IN HAS THE UNIFORM AND IT IS BUILT AROUND LEARNING DIFFERENT SKILLS. JOYFUL SERVICE, MAKES TV RATED — IT MAKES AN EASY TRANSITION. >> HE IS FROM ROCKLAND. >> IT’S AWESOME, I MADE SOME OF THE BEST FRIENDS IN MY YEAR OF LIFE, I WENT SAND DUNE IN DUBAI DESERTS, DID CITY TOURS IN SPAIN. >> FROM PEERS WE ARE HEADING TO A HELICOPTER FOR AN AIR TOUR OF THE NAVAL STATION AND WERE MET BY A 20-YEAR-OLD NAVY RESCUE SWIMMER. >> WE JUMP OFF THE PLANE, WE HOIST, WE DESCEND TO THE SURVIVOR, ASSESS. THEY ARE USUALLY IN DISTRESS, SO WE ARE DETERMINING HOW TO GET THEM SAFELY INTO THE HELICOPTER TO AVOID FURTHER INJURY AND GET THEM SAFELY HOME. >>IT’S TIME FOR THE FLIGHT TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER, IS A NARROW TURBOPROP CARGO PLANE WITH ROOM FOR 26 PASSENGERS AND JUST 2 SMALL PORTHOLES, INITIALLY WE WERE TOLD IF I WILL BE A HALF HOUR, THE CARRIER FOR THE SECURITY IS AT AN UNDISCLOSED LOCATION, THE FLIGHT IS CLOSER TO THREE HOURS. FINALLY, WE START DESCENDING, PREPARED TO GET ONE OF THE 4 STOPWIRE ON THE FLIGHT DECK. GO FROM 150 MPH TO A STOP IN LESS THAN TWO SECONDS. >> ARE WE GOOD? >> AND THEN OUR FIRST STEPS ON THE TRUMAN’S FLIGHT DECK. IT’S AWESOME, DISORIENTING AND AWESOME ALL AT THE SAME TIME. >> WHAT IS SO AMAZING THAT YOU ARE THERE FOR ONE NIGHT. >> WE SPENT THE NIGHT, WE ARE THERE A DAY AND A HALF, ENOUGH TIME TO SPEND TIME WITH THE STAFF OF THE DIFFERENT SAILORS. IT WAS INTERESTING TO HEAR ABOUT THEIR INTEREST IN THE NAVY AND WHY THEY JOINED, MANY OF THEM HAD FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE ARMY. OTHERS WANT TO GO AFTER A HIGHER GOAL THEY THOUGHT TO MAKE MILI
