Massport Virtual Forum to discuss new model of flight over Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT – A new flight path at Logan Airport could cause a lot of trouble for the community of Swampscott, but an upcoming meeting will give residents a chance to have their voices heard.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is hosting a virtual briefing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23. The meeting will focus on the new flight plans for runways 22L, 4R, 33L, 22L / R and 27. The meeting will include a question and answer session following the presentation of the study.

In early August, Swampscott’s board of directors sent a letter to Massport outlining concerns not only about noise issues but also pollution from planes above. The board of directors stressed in the letter that they are concerned that this new flight path will adversely affect the quality of life at Swampscott.

The flight model was created based on a study started in 2018 and released in 2021 by MIT to see what changes could be made to alleviate noise pollution in areas most frequently flown over. The new flight path would move the arrival of runway 22L further over the ocean, but it would still pass through cities. The new plan would move 25% of arriving flights over Nahant Causeway and ultimately over Swampscott.

“If noise reduction is the goal, it is troubling to us that the proposal does not further redirect flights over the ocean and limit the impact on residential and recreational areas,” said the administrator. municipal Sean Fitzgerald in early August.

The meeting will be held on Zoom from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on September 23 to discuss the results of the study. The Zoom meeting link is available at
