3-point all-star champion Malik Billingsley plays final minor league basketball game with Akron Aviators
(Akron, OH) – March 1, 2022 – Multi-award winning ABA All-Star Malik Billingsley is retiring after playing 4 seasons with the Northeast Ohio minor league basketball team , the Akron Aviators. Saturday, March 6, 2022 will be his last game as an airman as the team takes on the Dekalb, IL Midwest Falcons at the Mason Community Learning Center in Akron. Billingsley has missed part of this season due to a new men’s basketball assistant coaching position at Penn State-Shenango and is transitioning into a coaching and administrative role.
A graduate of Twinsburg High School and the University of Muskingum, Billingsley joined the Akron Aviators in their freshman season in 2017-18. As a player, he traveled across the United States, as the team played in Chicago, Syracuse NY, and even Honolulu, HI when the team made a trip to play Blaisdell Arena in a game local television their first season. Billingsley was the defending American Basketball Association 3-point champion and skills challenge champion from 2019-2021. He even proposed to his current wife at halftime of a game 2 seasons ago.
“He’s really a staple for this team not only as a player, but also as a major scout for new players,” Brian “Essince” Collins said. co-founder/co-owner of the team. “He’s been so loyal to this team and it’s amazing to see his growth. He used to travel over 3 hours round trip to come to training in his first season and we saw him become a leader and an ambassador. Of accolades, leadership and impact on the pitch. We will miss him, but are excited about this next chapter in his career.
