Kaley Cuoco’s leap from Big Bang Theory to flight attendant

During their conversation for Varietyin the Actors on Actors series, Elizabeth Olsen told Kaley Cuoco that she played Wanda Maximoff for two years in a row, having gone from the Disney Plus series “WandaVision” straight to the upcoming Marvel Studios film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . “

Cuoco’s first reaction was, “I was like, ‘How does it feel to play the same character? “Then she remembered” The Big Bang Theory: “” Oh, I’ve been doing this for 12 years, “she said.

Cuoco grew up in sitcoms, and she and Olsen, who dabbled in multi-camera comedy as part of the structure of “WandaVision,” have talked about the art of it.

“It is so hard!” Olsen said.

Cuoco agreed. “Obviously that’s my whole life,” she said. “Especially with ‘The Big Bang Theory’, we would have these guest stars, and some of them were wonderful actors in drama or whatever, and they would feel so lost for a while. It’s really so musical. Because I grew up with it, and I’ve been doing it for so long, it’s so natural to me. It’s very different if you haven’t.

She used to work on a stage in front of a live audience, and having her dressing room be something “only queens can imagine,” Cuoco said. “We were indoor cats, as we called ourselves.”

She started developing “The Flight Attendant” in 2017 when “The Big Bang Theory” was drawing to a close. She bought the rights to the book and formed the Yes, Norman company.

“The book is extremely dark. There isn’t a funny word, ”Cuoco said. “It’s tragic, and she is Great tragic. I loved the book, but I loved it. And I was like, ‘OK, let me have the rights to this. And maybe it is a movie.

“Then I started to sit on it; no, I think it’s a show. I laugh so hard, because the number of times we’ve used the word tone, I can never say the word Your again. I said: ‘The Your it’s me, and we’re going to throw this girl in this horrible situation, but you’re also gonna laugh, and you’re gonna cry, and then you’re gonna feel super uncomfortable. ‘ It couldn’t be just this darkness. We had to walk this tightrope, which by the way was a total challenge.

With Warner Bros. and Berlanti Productions, Cuoco accompanied “The Flight Attendant” to its November 2020 premiere on HBO Max. It was supposed to be a departure from “Big Bang,” Cuoco said, and from Penny, the character she had played for 12 seasons: “Obviously the bigger concern was like, ‘Oh, you’re gonna be known as Penny always! ‘ – which, by the way, if I was, great. Like, that would have been nice. Yes. I’m Penny.

And it clearly worked, as a newspaper report on the morning of the Golden Globes called her a “newcomer.” But being the executive producer of “The Flight Attendant,” as well as its star, was a fit.

“The job doesn’t really end,” Cuoco said. “As an actor, we come in and do our job, and it’s great, and then we move on to the next job. And what I learned during that process, the production side with “Flight Attendant”, is how a lot of the work starts the minute we go. “

On “The Flight Attendant,” things like blocking were also new to Cuoco. “In my sitcom life you sort of fight and find things. You don’t know what this person is going to do, and it’s really quick.

She also hated the mic packs she had to wear. “The poor sound department must have thought I despised them,” she said. “I was sweating and it falls. Oh my gosh those mic packs have made my life hell.

Olsen echoed Cuoco’s hatred. “When I’m in a superhero costume with a harness, because I have to fly, and where the mic goes, it’s like where the harness and cords have to go,” she said. “And, I’m like, ‘You guys, I’m going to fly. There will be a false wind. You’re not gonna hear me anyway! I’ll have all ADR anyway. It doesn’t matter.

“I’m more than shocked that we still have a battery in a pack that needs to be changed at lunch,” said Olsen.

“Makes me crazy!” Cuoco said.
