Flight costs: Holiday flights are getting more expensive as gas prices and demand soar

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – If you haven’t booked your Thanksgiving flight, you might want to do so soon.

Experts say plane tickets will only get more expensive as the holidays approach.

“If you’re planning to travel now for Thanksgiving or Christmas, you should have booked your ticket about three months ago,” said Brian Sumers, aviation expert and editor of Skift – an information site on the travel industry. “It’s a mess over there.”

On Tuesday, the cost of gas in Los Angeles County rose another cent. The average price is now $ 4.57.

Sumers said when fuel prices go up, so do flight costs.

“The airlines are trying to find this perfect place,” he said. “What’s the most money people will pay so that we can fill our planes?” “

Experts say traveling on Tuesdays or Wednesdays or non-holiday weeks can help save you money. There are also several apps that can help you.

“We like Hopper, which allows you to set an alert on a route and say, “Hey, tell me when is the best time to buy? Said Mitchell Stoutin with The guy at the points. “Skyscanner is another excellent for the wait and the crowd. It’s an app that lets you say more of, “Hey, find out where I am to anywhere.” “

But on Halloween, industry analysts said many of the deals would be canceled.

United said they are already seeing an increase in demand for the holidays and have so far hired an additional 1,000 pilots this year to help get more flights in the air.

The pandemic has caused thousands of cancellations and delays, so experts say you should try to book the flight as early as possible for the day. That way if something goes wrong you have more options later.
