HONOLULU (KHON2) – The mother of a beloved Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant who died in a small plane crash in Alaska in July has said she will continue to postpone the ceremony to honor her life. She said her daughter has touched the lives of many people and wants to include them all whenever COVID restrictions allow.
Liane Vierra has embarked on a months-long journey to recovery. Her 27-year-old daughter McKenna Vierra, cancer survivor and aspiring pilot, died in a plane crash, along with a 23-year-old pilot.

“We have family and friends coming in, we have McKenna in her room and we set it up to be like a little memorial to her,” Vierra said. “And they come and we invite them to close the door and spend the time they need. “
A celebration of life was slated for September, but was postponed after rules on gatherings tightened due to the surge in COVID cases.
But even after the city announced Friday, October 8, would allow up to 150 people at the outdoor funeral, Vierra said she wanted to wait a little longer so everyone in her daughter’s life could be there.
Vierra is also aware of the impacts COVID can have. She said she was a revolutionary case and her eldest daughter also fell ill with the virus and showed severe symptoms.
“And was hospitalized and it was scary,” Vierra explained. “And it was a very trying time; COVID is serious business, so we would rather wait and be safe than have to live with the regret that we put our family or friends in danger. “
Vierra said it had been hard to wait to celebrate McKenna’s life, but said she was taking it step by step.
“I still have my moments, like now, it’s because we miss her, we miss her presence physically,” said Vierra. “But again, we have to love all of our family and friends who support us at times like these.”
