(TNS) – Edwards Air Force Base in eastern Kern County, the US Air Force’s second-largest base, will be the site of a $ 36.4 million project awarded last week by the department US Defense Force, through the US Army Corps of Engineers. .
The project involves the design and construction of a new flight test engineering lab, an effort licensed and funded at the request of Representative Kevin McCarthy, R- Bakersfield, McCarthy’s office said in a press release. Thursday.
The project modernizes Edwards’ testing, evaluation and development capabilities so that the Department of Defense maintains state-of-the-art weapon systems and technology, the statement said.
The estimated completion of the project is in the fall of 2023.
According to a spokesperson for the 412th Test Wing, the host wing of Edwards, the test wing has a long history of development and testing, not just for the Air Force, but for others. branches of the armed forces.
The 412th plans, conducts, analyzes and reports on all flight and ground tests of aircraft, weapon systems, software and components as well as modeling and simulation for the Air Force, according to the test wing website. The three essential components of its mission are flight operations, maintenance and engineering.
With a maintenance group of over 2,000 and an operations group of 3,000, the Test Wing maintains and flies an average of 90 aircraft with over 30 different aircraft designs, and flies over 7,400 missions per year.
Edwards’ Test Flight School, which is also part of the Test Wing, is where the best Air Force pilots, navigators and engineers learn to conduct flight tests and generate the data needed to perform test missions.
The Engineering Division and the Electronic Warfare Division provide the central elements in the conduct of the test and evaluation mission.
The test wing is complemented by the Project and Resource Management divisions, which form the basis for the management of test assignments.
The Edwards flight line itself is proudly known as the “Center of the Aeronautical Universe”.
McCarthy issued the following statement regarding the award:
“Edwards Air Force Base has been the epitome of technological advancements within our military for generations, and this new flight test lab will help ensure this legacy of innovation continues.
“Through this project, the development of this state-of-the-art complex, mission-critical for 412 Test Wing, will enhance flight test activities and strengthen recruitment, training and retention efforts.” to strengthen our talented workforce at Edwards.
“With emerging threats to national security and the increased complexity of integrating advanced technologies, it is important that the men and women working at Edwards have the infrastructure to effectively test and evaluate weapon systems. that will help protect our country. “
According to a list of Department of Defense contracts, Korte Construction Co. of St. Louis was awarded the contract to construct the facility at Edwards.
